Since my last update on progress for a new GP surgery for Wixams, I have received further updates from the ICB.
Designs and plans for the health centre are expected to come forward for planning consent in the first half of 2026, alongside the development of a full business case between all parties.
Ahead of any planning submission, the ICB says it will work with Urban&Civic and other partners to share information with the local community, providing an opportunity to understand the proposals and ask questions as the plans develop.
Agreements will also need to be completed between the various partners for the transfer of Section 106 funding from Central Bedfordshire, and carry out an assessment of the ongoing revenue costs of the proposed health centre.
This is all in line with my recent update following my meeting with Urban & Civic.
This was my update at the time:
Today, I met with James Mooney and Jordan Payne from Urban & Civic alongside local councillors Graeme Coombes, Cllr Andrea Spice, Marc Frost, Cllr Martin Towler and Tom Wootton Mayor of Bedford to review progress on the long-awaited Wixams GP surgery.
After years of delays, the project is now moving forward in a much more positive direction.
Since our elections we’ve worked closely with the NHS Integrated Care Board and the developers to remove the remaining barriers and keep momentum going. And I have also been raising this priority with the Secretary of State and Health Ministers at every opportunity in Westminster.
Here’s where things stand now ![]()
A new two-storey GP surgery is planned near Wixams Town Centre (with all patient services on the ground floor)
Concept designs have been developed and reviewed by NHS partners
Further meetings are already scheduled to finalise costs and delivery timescales
A public information event will take place soon
A planning application is expected in 2026
There is still work ahead — including planning approval, construction and securing a GP practice — but real steps are being made in the right direction, and the most progress we’ve seen in years.
I’ll continue to push hard, alongside councillors, community groups and NHS partners, and do everything I can to make sure these promises turn into reality.
