We all deserve to live in a safe community. I will continue to campaign for more visible policing in our rural communities, supported by a fairer funding formula from Government that recognises the complexities of our county.
I successfully worked with local constituent Tracey Hanson and Ministers to pass amendments to the Victims and Courts Act to ensure that victims are aware of their rights if criminals aren’t given tough enough sentences. And I’m working to give the police and the justice system that powers they need to clamp down on shoplifting, repeat offenders and rural and wildlife crimes.
Safety in our communities doesn’t just mean safety from crime. I am working to bring together the local police, Councillors and other stakeholders to tackle road safety issues. That includes getting HGVs off of our rural lanes wherever possible and I will keep pushing for new powers for the police – so that they don’t have to physically stop HGVs in the moment to be able to enforce breaches of weight limits on rural roads.
